Selling Items by Weight

Retailer allows you to set items to require a weight when sold, either with an integrated weighing scale or manually with the on-screen keypad. This setting can be enabled by department, category, or individual stock items.

Check for the Scales Module

The Scales module is required for selling items by weight, either with an integrated weighing scale or manually using the on-screen keypad. To check this:
  1. On the top menu bar of Retailer, click on Help → Register.
  2. The Scales tickbox must be ticked. If it isn't, contact Tower Support to have it enabled.

Enable Scales for Terminal

Each terminal you want to sell items by weight must have the scales option enabled.
  1. From the main screen of Retailer, click on Setup → Point of Sale → Terminals → Third Party Integration.
  2. Under 'Scales Attached', tick the 'Enabled' checkbox.
  3. Click Save.
  4. Close and reopen Retailer to load this setting

Department Default Setting

  1. From the main screen of Retailer, click on Stock Maintenance → Suppliers & Departments.
  2. Click on the magnifying glass button 🔎︎ to search for the department.
  3. Select the department and click OK.
  4. Tick Stock Items required to be weighed?
  5. Click Save.
  6. A warning message will appear asking "Do you want to update the "Weight Required" setting for all Categories in this Department, and all Stock in this Department and any of it's Categories?"
  7. Click Yes.

Category Default Setting

  1. From the main screen of Retailer, click on the Stock Maintenance → Suppliers & Departments.
  2. Click on the magnifying glass button 🔎︎ to search for the department.
  3. Select the department and click OK.
  4. Click the Categories tab at the top.
  5. Click on the magnifying glass button 🔎︎ to search for the category within the department.
  6. Tick Stock Items required to be weighed?
  7. Click Save.
  8. A warning message will appear asking "Do you want to update the "Weight Required" setting for all Stock in this Category?"
  9. Click Yes.

Individual Stock Item Setting

  1. From the main screen of Retailer, click on Stock -> Stock Screen.
  2. Click on the magnifying glass button 🔎︎ to search for the stock item.
  3. Select the stock item and click OK.
  4. Click on the Other tab at the top of the screen.
  5. Tick Weight required when sold.
  6. Click Save.

Sales Unit of Measure

A Sales UOM can be set to display items in the point of sale grid and on receipts with the correct form of measurement, e.g. kilograms.

Processing Sales by Weight with Integrated Scales

  1. From the main screen of Retailer, click on Point of Sale.
  2. Scan or press [Enter] to select the item from the Find Stock Screen.
  3. Place your item onto the integrated scales.
  4. The integrated sales will send the weight automatically to Retailer.
    Note: An on-screen keypad will be displayed if the weight cannot be read. Press the Scales button ⚖ to take another reading. If the Scales button ⚖ shows no weight, you can manually enter the weight using the onscreen keypad.

Processing Sales by Weight with Normal Scales

  1. From the main screen of Retailer, click on Point of Sale.
  2. Scan or press [Enter] to select the item from the Find Stock Screen.
  3. Place your item onto the normal scales.
  4. An on-screen keypad will be displayed for you to enter your weight manually.
