Bulk Price Increase Options (Surcharge Ban)

Bulk Price Increase Options (Surcharge Ban)

Important
Important: If you sell products where the supplier sets and displays the price directly on the product (for example, magazines and greeting cards, common in Newsagencies), do not include these items in a bulk price increase. The supplier controls the price, not you. Use Department/Category scoping to exclude these products before running any bulk price increase.

With upcoming pricing changes (such as the card surcharge ban from 1 October 2026), many retailers want to review their prices. There are a few things to do, depending on whether you need your entire existing range repriced immediately, or just want new pricing to apply going forward.

Regardless if you need every item on your shelves repriced today, the simplest option going forward is to increase the Retail Markup % on the relevant Department or Category. This only affects prices calculated from cost going forward, for new stock as it arrives. It does not change the price of stock you already have on hand:

  1. Go to Stock Maintenance → Suppliers & Departments.
  2. On the Departments tab, select the Department (or use the Categories sub-tab for a specific Category within it).
  3. Increase the Retail Markup % (Above Cost Inc) field to reflect your new margin.
  4. Optionally, set a Rounding Value so newly calculated prices land on a clean interval, e.g. enter 0.50 and choose Up in Multiples of Rounding Value to always round up to the nearest 50 cents. Rounding is applied as a multiple of whatever value you enter, so this works cleanly for intervals like 25c/50c/$1, but can't produce prices that always end a certain way (such as .95 or .99)
See our Stock Price Rounding article for the full explanation. If you specifically want .95/.99-style pricing across a whole Department or Category, that can only be done in bulk through the billable script option below - Option 2.
  5. Click Save.

This is the least disruptive option: no Excel work, no barcode risk, and no bulk price-change across your existing range. It suits retailers who are comfortable letting the price increase phase in naturally as stock turns over, rather than applying it retroactively to everything already in store.

If you need your existing stock repriced immediately, you have two options:

Option 1: Do it yourself using Stock Manager

This is a free option using tools already in Retailer, and can be used together with the Bulk Price Change utility.

You can make bulk price changes directly within Stock Manager itself, see Making Bulk Changes Through Stock Manager for the steps. When updating pricing, you can update by a percentage of existing prices. Note this step does not implement rounding to a clean price ending (such as the nearest dollar or 95 cents), every item is set to the same new price, percentage increase or requires manual entry per item.

Alert
Editing a large number of stock items will create some backend-processing load. If you are editing more than 10000 items at a time, please contact Tower Support during business hours after applying changes, to prevent Retailer from freezing up.

If rounding matters for your surcharge increase, you can update through the Bulk Price Change utility.
As the Bulk Price Change utility must complete all changes in one session, it's recommended to do this one Department at a time:
  1. Stay on the Stock Manager screen, and click Remove All to clear the screen.
  2. Use the Search to load one Department, and send the list to Bulk Price Change.
  3. In the Bulk Price Change screen, input the desired New Retail Prices with rounding as needed. See Bulk Price Changes for details.
The GST amounts will also need to be updated, and this can be done by clicking into Utilities → Check GST Payable and GST Credit.
This utility may take a long time to process if run for all items, which may slow or disrupt sales, so you may wait to do this outside busy hours.

Option 2: Have Tower Systems do it for you (billable call)

If you'd prefer to have your prices increased directly in your database, we offer a billable script to apply the increase for you.

Cost prices are never changed, only sell prices. Contact our support team to discuss details, arrange a time and get pricing for this service.

Warning
Please note that you will need to reprint any price labels for products you increase in price, so doing this for all your existing stock may require a lot of relabeling.
