Many items sold in retail stores require the purchaser to be of a minimum legal age, such as spray paint, some knives, lottery products, alcohol and tobacco. Retailer’s Age Check facility enables you to set certain departments and categories as age-sensitive, prompting staff to enter the customer’s Date of Birth before allowing a sale to continue.
Enable Age Check
This section enables the Customer Legal Age value, and turns on an automatic Age Check prompt for each terminal, based on your department/category setting.
- From the main screen of Retailer, go to Setup -> Point Of Sale
- Select the Terminals tab and select the terminal you would like the Age Prompt on.
- Under the Terminals list, select the Other tab
- Double-click on the Enable Age Check in Point of Sale tickbox for each terminal.
- Set the legal age for customers. By default, the Customer Legal Age is set to 18.
Once the feature has been enabled, you need to set how Retailer prompts for an age check. This can be done in either one of the methods below:
- Prompt when an items from a specific department/category is sold
- Manually prompting through an on-screen button
Prompt for Department/Category Sale
Department
- From the main screen of Retailer, go to Stock -> Suppliers & Departments.
- Use the magnifying glass to locate the particular department.
- Tick Enable Age Check for this Department?
- Click Save.
Category
- From the main screen of Retailer, go to Stock -> Suppliers & Departments.
- Use the magnifying glass to locate the particular department.
- Click on the Categories tab.
- Use the magnifying glass to locate the particular category.
- Tick Enable Age Check for this Category?
- Click Save.
On-Screen Button Prompt
- From the Point of Sale Screen, Enter Edit Mode. See here for instructions on editing the POS screen.
- Click the button you wish to use:
- Enter a description in Button Text or click Add Image.
- Set Button Type to Action.
- Set Action Type to Age Check.
- Configure the colours for the button and text (optional).
- Configure the text size and text font (optional).
- Click Save.
Processing Sales
Once the above has been set up, the process will go as explained below:
- When an item from an enabled department/category is scanned or when the on-screen button is used, a screen will appear asking if the customer appears to be old enough to purchase the item.
- Click Yes to confirm that they are of age. If you click No, the transaction will be cancelled.
- The Customer Age Check screen will then appear.
- Enter the customer's date of birth as well as any other information and click OK.
- If the date of birth is valid, the sale will continue as normal.
