If your keyboard is not working properly, there are a number of things that you can check before concluding that the keyboard is faulty. These include:

  • Making sure no keys are stuck down
  • Checking the cable connections
  • Restarting the computer

Make Sure Keys are Unstuck

First of all, check that no keys are stuck down as this can prevent other keys from working. The keys in particular to check are the [Ctrl], [Alt] and [Shift] keys on both sides of the keyboard.

Simply press on them a few times and that should release them if they are stuck.

Check Cable Connections

Follow the cable from your keyboard to the back of the computer. There are 2 possible connections that they keyboard may use; the older PS/2 connection and the newer USB connection, as shown below.

Unplug the connection and making sure there is no build up of dust or bent pins.

Then, plug it back in. If you have a PS/2 connection, make sure it is plugged into the PURPLE port.
If your keyboard has a PS/2 plug, it may be worth getting a new keyboard. Many new computers no longer support this connection.

Restart the Computer

If the keyboard still does not work, the computer may need to be restarted. Just to be sure, use the Shut Down button and leave the computer turned off for 30-60 seconds. Then turn the computer back on.
