Filtering columns in screen grids

Filtering columns in screen grids

In Retailer, there are many areas where a grid of information is shown such as the various Search screens, the Customer transaction history in the Customer screen, and the Previous Sales screen listing details of prior sales.

The columns in these grids and screens can often be filtered to show specific information.
For example, in the Stock search screen, the Sell Price column can be filtered to only show items priced $10, or the Customer transaction history in the Customer screen can have the Date column filtered to only show transactions on 13 August 2022.

To find out if a column can be filtered, simply move the mouse over the column heading, and if you see a little Funnel icon (looks like a downwards arrow with a line beneath), then the column can be filtered.

Clicking the Funnel icon will drop a list of available filtering options.
This list usually starts with All, and then Custom.

  1. Selecting All sets it to the default behaviour where no filters are applied and you should see all available lines below.

  2. Selecting Custom will bring up a small screen (Custom Filter) where you can set criteria to filter for.
On each line of criteria, you can choose a condition such as 'less than' or 'contains'.
In the box to the right, you can then type in the specific value to filter for.
Click OK when ready, and the grid will filter based on the criteria conditions.
Click Cancel if don't want to use the Custom filter.
You may sometimes use more than one conditional filter together (And) to find lines that fulfill multiple conditions, or find any lines that fulfill even one of multiple conditions (Or).
  3. Notes
The Custom filters for 'Less than', 'Equal to', 'Greater than' are generally only going to work with numbers like prices.
The filers for 'Like', 'Contains', 'Begins with' are generally for use with text which can include letters and numbers.
  4. The remainder of the list will be filled with the values it can see in the grid below. So, if the column was for Sell Price, you may see values like $1, $2.99, $35 in the rest of the list.
Selecting one of these values from the list will filter the grid to only show lines where that value is seen.
E.g. Selecting $1 will filter the grid to only show items with $1 price.

Idea
The terminal you are using will remember the filter settings, so it's a good idea to always switch that column filter back to All at the end. Otherwise, the next time you look at this grid, you may miss other information with the filter still enabled.
